Abstract:

Because of the heavy reliance on induced abortion in the former Soviet Union in the past century, there is special interest in the growing substitution of contraception for abortion in that part of the world. Data from the 1995 Kazakhstan Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) and the more recently completed 1999 KDHS reveal an increase in contraceptive practices and a decline in abortion. A model of the fertility regulation process was constructed in order to examine the different combination of changes in contraceptive prevalence, failure rates, method mix, and rates of discontinuation of contraceptive use in the further reduction of abortion.
