To achieve comparable information across countries, it is necessary to ensure that the questionnaires and the survey procedures followed in each country are similar. Therefore, The DHS program has developed a set of basic documentation to go with the model questionnaires.

AIS Interviewer’s Manual
This manual explains to interviewers how to do their job. The manual includes information about implementation of the survey, training activities, and fieldwork procedures. It details interview techniques and procedures for completing the questionnaires.
AIS Supervisor’s and Editor's Manual
This manual explains to field supervisors how to do their jobs. This is a “model” manual that reflects the standard AIS protocol for how to organize and implement the survey. Responsibilities of field supervisors, ensuring the availability of necessary training and fieldwork materials, organizing and overseeing interviewers and interviewer fieldwork, and monitoring interviewer performance are discussed in detail.
AIS Guidelines for Interviewer Training
This manual was produced as an aid for use in the design and implementation of field staff training. This document provides general guidelines for organizing and conducting the training of the field staff. The manual also includes a section on supervising fieldwork and the use of field check tables.
AIS Household Listing Manual
Prior to interviewing, it is necessary to list all households in the clusters selected from the sampling frame. This manual discusses the responsibilities of the listing staff, definition of terms, materials needed, the locating of the clusters, drawing sketch maps of the clusters, listing the households, segmentation of large clusters, and quality control issues of listing procedures.
DHS Sampling Manual
The sampling methodology for the AIDS Indicator Survey is based on the general policy for that of the Demographic and Health Surveys. The DHS Sampling Manual is provided as a guide for sampling for the AIS survey. Probability sampling using a preexisting sampling frame, with a two-stage cluster sample selection, is recommended. Procedures for selecting households from clusters (enumeration areas) are also explained.
Tabulation Plan for the AIS Preliminary Report
This plan provides the tables for presenting the preliminary results obtained from the AIS survey. The preliminary report consists of 18 tables which focus on key AIDS indicators. The preliminary report should be made available within one month after the end of fieldwork.
Tabulation Plan for the AIS Final Report
This tabulation plan provides all of the tables for presenting the final results obtained from the AIS survey. The Tabulation Plan is divided into eight chapters: Introduction; Household Population and Housing Characteristics; Characteristics of Respondents; HIV/AIDS-Related Knowledge; Attitudes Relating to HIV/AIDS; HIV/AIDS-Related Behavior; Youth and HIV/AIDS; and Orphans and Vulnerable Children.
HIV Testing Manual
This manual provides an overview of the procedures for collecting blood samples in the field during household surveys. The manual lays out a standard approach for the collection, storage and transportation of dried blood spots and includes protocols for biohazard waste disposal and safety precautions when taking blood samples.
Tabulation Plan for HIV Prevalence
This tabulation plan provides the tables for presenting the results of HIV testing as part of the AIS. The tabulation plan consists of 2 tables for the preliminary report; 12 tables for the final report, and 4 data quality tables as an appendix to the final report.
