CALVERTON, MD. October 1, 2008-Macro today announced that it was awarded the MEASURE Phase III Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) contract for international survey research in population and health by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The five-year project will support the Monitoring and Evaluation to Assess and Use Results (MEASURE) Program by serving as the Bureau for Global Health's primary demographic and health data collection effort.
Since 1989, Macro has been a major part of USAID's initiatives to help developing countries collect and use data to monitor and evaluate population, health, and nutrition programs. Over the years, our Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) activities have expanded to include emerging issues such as reproductive health, children's vaccination programs, and HIV/AIDS. We also have broadened DHS's geographic horizons and incorporated new methods and technology.
Over the past 25 years, the DHS program has assisted more than 200 surveys in more than 80 developing countries. MEASURE DHS surveys are large, nationally representative efforts, typically including 5,000 to 30,000 households and more than 10,000 respondents. The MEASURE Phase III DHS project will support testing for national rates of HIV, malaria, anemia, and other health threats. Surveys will continue to cover multiple areas of family planning, reproductive health, child health, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases, such as malaria, and gender.
"MEASURE DHS is considered the ‘gold standard' in national survey research," said Dr. Ann Way, the project director. "DHS surveys are widely respected and widely used worldwide. For the new project, we will expand efforts to build local capacity to collect, analyze, and use data in close collaboration with our project partners: The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, PATH, CAMRIS, Blue Raster, and The Futures Institute."
